Resident Evil Requiem Was Originally Planned as an Online Action Game
Resident Evil Requiem was initially planned as an online game, but Capcom eventually changed its direction to focus on traditional survival horror and the single-player experience.
The development team reportedly explored several different ideas during the early stages of production. However, after evaluating the results, the developers decided to move away from online gameplay and return to the horror elements that have defined the Resident Evil series.
According to IGN, Masachika Kawata, the game's producer, discussed the development process in the publication Biohazard 30th Special Mook, explaining how the team experimented with different concepts before settling on the game's final direction.
Kawata explained: “Each game is a continuous process of trial and error. For example, in Resident Evil Requiem, Koshi Nakanishi, the game’s director, first went so far as to develop it as an online game. However, the results of the studies and research that was conducted in the middle of development were not favorable, so we decided to once again prioritize the concept of fear and abandon the online direction.”
The decision reflected the development team's intention to preserve the atmosphere of fear and tension associated with the Resident Evil franchise.
The developers faced a similar challenge when choosing the game's main characters. Leon S. Kennedy was initially considered for the central role, but his extensive combat experience made it difficult to maintain the level of fear the team wanted to create.
As a result, the developers decided to introduce Grace as a new character to help balance the game's horror and action elements.
Kawata stated: “Leon was the first character to be confirmed as the protagonist of the story. However, we realized that with Leon alone, who is highly skilled in combat, the sense of fear would no longer work. Therefore, we decided to introduce Grace as a new character.”
Capcom has previously experimented with online and multiplayer features in the Resident Evil series.
In 2022, Jun Takeuchi revealed that during the development of Resident Evil 7, there had been significant pressure to introduce online functionality and microtransactions.
However, the development team ultimately prioritized a traditional single-player survival horror experience instead.
The development history of Resident Evil Requiem highlights Capcom's continued efforts to balance new gameplay ideas with the horror elements that longtime fans associate with the franchise.
