RPCS3 PS4 Port v0.40 Improves PS3 Game Emulation

An unofficial PlayStation 4 port of the RPCS3 PlayStation 3 emulator has received version 0.40, introducing changes intended to improve game stability and address technical problems found in earlier builds.

Released on October 24, 2026, the experimental update comes from Roberix Studio and Mifi Studios and requires a PS4 running the GoldHEN homebrew environment.

According to the developer's official GitHub release notes, the update reduces unnecessary emulator threads, reserving more of the console's limited resources for games.

It also introduces an automatic safe mode that adjusts individual game settings after a failure, with up to three fallback levels.

Graphics improvements address objects disappearing during shader compilation, including an issue observed in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006). Another fix targets a video-memory crash associated with X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Audio playback has also been corrected to prevent sound from disappearing after pausing, while configuration changes should now apply more consistently.

Additional changes affect physical disc handling, locally stored decryption keys, and the XMB-style interface, which now supports game-specific backgrounds, music, and folders.

The port uses RPCS3's existing emulation core, adapted for PS4 hardware through the OpenOrbis toolchain and Mesa graphics components.

However, the developers caution that compatibility remains limited. Version 0.39 allowed several games to reach their menus without entering stable gameplay, and v0.40 has not yet demonstrated consistently playable results across the PS3 library.

Performance also varies significantly between games because of the PS4's hardware limitations.

The project is independent of Sony and the official RPCS3 development team. It does not include copyrighted PS3 games, firmware, or decryption keys.
