Salsa64 0.2.12 Fixes Four Nintendo 64 Games on PS3

Salsa64, the Nintendo 64 emulator developed for PlayStation 3, has received version 0.2.12, bringing major compatibility fixes for several racing games and classic arcade titles.

Developer ricowp81 released the update on October 26, 2026, targeting problems that previously prevented certain games from starting or displaying graphics correctly.

According to the official Salsa64 v0.2.12 release notes, Cruis'n USA no longer freezes at its copyright screen. The issue involved controller communication timing, which the emulator now handles more accurately. The developer confirmed that the game starts, races, and saves on real PS3 hardware.

Cruis'n Exotica has also received a significant improvement. A graphics microcode compatibility fix restores missing geometry, allowing the game to run at full speed. Occasional single-frame glitches affecting the speedometer remain possible.

Monaco Grand Prix previously froze after selecting Single mode. The update corrects a graphics-processing delay that prevented the audio system from receiving data in time.

Another fix targets Midway's Greatest Arcade Hits Volume 1. Games including Joust, Defender, and Robotron now render correctly instead of displaying black screens, thanks to added Fast3D Sprite2D support.

Beyond compatibility, Salsa64 0.2.12 reduces graphics-related SPU stack usage by approximately 2.5 KB and switches to GCC 13 for compilation. Diagnostic logs now identify graphics microcode versions and CRC-32 values.

Salsa64 remains an unofficial, open-source Nintendo 64 emulator designed for PS3 systems using HEN or custom firmware. It does not include copyrighted Nintendo game ROMs.

Compatibility is still incomplete, with performance drops and graphical issues affecting certain titles.
