Shigeru Miyamoto Hints at Returning to Game Development
Shigeru Miyamoto, the legendary Nintendo creator behind Super Mario and The Legend of Zelda, has suggested that he could return to developing video games despite currently focusing much of his attention on filmmaking.
The 73-year-old designer discussed his future during a press conference held at Nintendo's headquarters in Kyoto on October 22, 2026, following his selection to receive Japan's prestigious Order of Culture.
According to the original interview published by GAME Watch, Miyamoto explained that he has become deeply involved in film production and enjoys exploring what he can create alongside experienced filmmakers.
However, he acknowledged that working on movies could eventually inspire him to develop another game.
Miyamoto also expressed interest in experimenting with unconventional ideas, including projects that Nintendo would not normally pursue.
He suggested that technological advancements have made certain creative processes faster and more accessible, giving developers greater freedom to explore new concepts.
The veteran designer emphasized that he intends to continue experimenting with different forms of entertainment as long as he remains motivated to create.
During the conference, Miyamoto also discussed the importance of originality within Nintendo, noting that the company now employs approximately 3,000 to 4,000 developers worldwide.
He acknowledged the challenges of preserving Nintendo's creative philosophy as the company continues to expand.
Miyamoto joined Nintendo in 1977 and helped establish several of the industry's most influential franchises, including Donkey Kong, Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, and Pikmin.
Despite his comments, Miyamoto has not officially announced a new game or confirmed plans to personally direct another Nintendo title.
He is scheduled to receive Japan's Order of Culture during a ceremony on November 3, 2026.
