Sonic 3D Blast PC Port Tests Live Saturn and Genesis Switching

An upcoming unofficial PC port of Sonic 3D Blast is testing a feature that allows players to switch between the Sega Saturn and Genesis versions of the game without interrupting gameplay.

Developer Mr. Matt, known online as TheOneMrMatt, has shared details of the experimental system, which changes the game's graphics and audio between the two console versions. The transition is triggered by pressing the L and R controller buttons together.

The feature requires players to supply their own legally obtained copy of the Genesis or Mega Drive release alongside the Saturn game data. It is not intended to distribute Sega's original copyrighted assets.

The project is based on a decompilation of the Sega Saturn version rather than a conventional emulator. Mr. Matt has described the work as a native PC port written in C, using SDL and software rendering with OpenGL presentation.

The Saturn and Genesis releases have distinct visual styles and soundtracks. The Saturn edition features enhanced presentation and music composed by Richard Jacques, while the Genesis version uses a different soundtrack associated with Jun Senoue.

Allowing players to switch between those versions during the same playthrough presents technical challenges, particularly when maintaining consistent game behavior across different graphics and audio systems.

Mr. Matt has described the feature as one of the project's most difficult additions and plans extensive testing to address remaining issues.

The live-switching system remains a work-in-progress experiment. Its inclusion in the first public release has not been confirmed.

The unofficial PC port is separate from Sega's original Windows release of Sonic 3D Blast, which launched in 1997.
