Sony Acquisition Rumors Surround Kena Developer Ember Lab
Sony acquisition rumors have emerged around Ember Lab, the developer behind Kena: Bridge of Spirits, after fans noticed a possible change in copyright information associated with its upcoming sequel, Kena: Scars of Kosmora.
The speculation began when users compared promotional materials for the new game, claiming that a recent PlayStation video displayed Sony Interactive Entertainment as the copyright holder instead of Ember Lab.
An original Reddit discussion highlighted the apparent difference, raising questions about whether Sony had acquired the Kena intellectual property or potentially purchased Ember Lab itself.
However, neither Sony nor Ember Lab has announced an acquisition, and the promotional material alone does not establish that a deal has taken place.
The official PlayStation page for Kena: Scars of Kosmora currently lists Sony Interactive Entertainment as the publisher while continuing to identify Ember Lab as the owner of the game's characters and associated trademarks.
This distinction is important because publishing rights and studio ownership are separate matters. Sony can publish a game without acquiring its developer or the underlying franchise.
Ember Lab also continues to describe itself as an independent development studio on its official website.
The companies already have an established working relationship. Sony supported the original Kena: Bridge of Spirits, which launched in 2021, and is publishing its upcoming sequel.
Kena: Scars of Kosmora was originally scheduled for 2026, but Ember Lab recently moved the release to 2027 to allow additional development time.
The sequel is planned for PlayStation 5 and PC, with a larger adventure, expanded combat mechanics, and new Spirit Companions.
For now, the reported copyright discrepancy remains an unconfirmed clue rather than evidence of an acquisition. An official announcement from Sony or Ember Lab would be needed to establish whether any change in ownership has occurred.
