Sony Announces Midnight Black PS5 Digital Edition for Japan

Sony Interactive Entertainment has officially announced a new Midnight Black version of the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, scheduled to launch exclusively in Japan on November 19, 2026.

The console will be priced at 55,000 yen, including tax, with pre-orders beginning on October 20 through selected PlayStation retailers and online stores across Japan.

According to the official PlayStation Blog announcement, the new model follows the same regional restrictions as the previously released Japan-only PS5 Digital Edition.

Players must set the console language to Japanese and use a PlayStation Network account registered in Japan. These restrictions make the model unsuitable for users who require other system languages or PlayStation account regions.

The Midnight Black edition features an 825GB SSD and retains the core hardware capabilities of the standard PS5, including 3D audio, support for compatible PS4 games, and DualSense controller features.

The console does not include a built-in disc drive. However, Sony will release a matching Midnight Black disc drive on November 19 for 11,980 yen, allowing owners to play physical games. An internet connection is required when pairing the drive with the console.

The new color scheme also matches Sony's existing Midnight Black accessories, including the PlayStation Portal remote player.

Sony has additionally confirmed that the console qualifies for its extended warranty campaign in Japan. Eligible buyers who complete the required registration before March 31, 2027, can receive two years of manufacturer warranty coverage instead of the standard one year.

Both the Midnight Black PS5 Digital Edition and its matching disc drive will be available for pre-order starting October 20, ahead of their November release.
