Sony Has Funded Over 120 Games During the PS5 Generation
Sony Interactive Entertainment has fully or partially funded more than 120 game projects during the PlayStation 5 generation, highlighting the company's investment in independent developers and third-party studios.
The figure was revealed by Christian Svensson, Sony's vice president of second- and third-party content, during an interview with The Game Business in May 2026.
According to The Game Business, the total does not include projects supported through PlayStation's regional Hero Project programs, which operate under separate funding arrangements.
Svensson explained that financial investment represents only one part of Sony's strategy for supporting developers. The company also provides technical assistance, development equipment, marketing support, and opportunities for smaller studios to reach PlayStation audiences.
Sony currently works with approximately 10,000 developers and publishers worldwide, supported by five internal teams responsible for different areas of its external development partnerships.
The company also operates smaller funding initiatives, including grants for independent developers that do not require repayment. These programs are designed to help bring games to PlayStation that might otherwise struggle to secure financial support.
Sony's Hero Project initiatives separately support emerging studios in China, India, and the Middle East and North Africa, with a focus on developing local talent and expanding the PlayStation ecosystem.
Svensson emphasized that independent games are an important part of PlayStation's lineup and should receive visibility alongside major AAA releases.
He also expressed optimism about upcoming projects, suggesting that several unannounced games currently in development could strengthen the industry's lineup over the next three to five years.
The funding figures demonstrate Sony's continued investment in external studios as the company works to expand the range of games available across its PlayStation platforms.
