Sony Patent Reveals AI Frame Generation for PlayStation
Sony Interactive Entertainment has published a new patent describing an AI-powered frame generation system designed to predict upcoming game frames before they are fully rendered.
Published on October 15, 2026, under patent number US 2026/0320740 A1, the technology uses a neural network model to generate synthetic frames based on previously rendered images, motion information, and potentially the player's controller inputs.
Unlike traditional frame interpolation techniques, which generate additional images between two completed frames, Sony's proposed system uses frame extrapolation to predict what will appear next.
The technology relies on an autoencoder consisting of two neural networks. An encoder converts an existing image into a compact representation, while a decoder uses that information to predict a future frame.
This process could allow a synthetic frame to appear on screen while the graphics processor continues rendering the next real frame.
By avoiding the need to wait for a second completed image, Sony's approach aims to improve perceived smoothness while potentially reducing additional input latency.
However, predicting future frames introduces challenges. Sudden camera movements, unexpected player actions, and newly appearing objects could produce visible errors in generated images.
The patent also describes an alternative approach that predicts future images by moving pixel blocks according to motion information without relying on neural networks.
Although the technology could potentially benefit future PlayStation hardware, Sony has not confirmed plans to implement it in PlayStation 5, PlayStation 6, or any commercial product.
The filing does not provide confirmed performance benchmarks or a release timeline.
