Switch 2 Lite Rumors Grow After Samsung's New 8nm Chip

Nintendo Switch 2 Lite speculation has gained fresh attention following reports that Samsung is preparing a more efficient 8nm semiconductor manufacturing process, potentially opening the door to a smaller, less expensive version of Nintendo's latest console.

South Korean technology publication Electronic Times reported on October 21, 2026, that Samsung Foundry plans to introduce its second-generation 8LPU+ process before the end of the year.

Compared with the existing 8LPU process, the new technology reportedly offers 12% higher performance, 15% lower power consumption, and an 8% reduction in logic area.

These figures describe semiconductor manufacturing improvements, not confirmed performance specifications for a future Nintendo console.

The development attracted attention because Samsung is widely reported to manufacture NVIDIA's custom T239 processor used in Nintendo Switch 2 hardware.

In an October 22 analysis, Nintendo Patents Watch raised the possibility that the revised manufacturing process could support a smaller and more efficient Switch 2 system-on-chip.

Samsung's process relies on existing deep ultraviolet manufacturing equipment, potentially reducing production costs compared with moving to more advanced fabrication technologies.

However, the company's reported priorities for 8LPU+ include automotive electronics, robotics, and edge AI processors. No available announcement identifies Nintendo or NVIDIA as customers for the revised process.

A more efficient processor could theoretically benefit a compact handheld through reduced power consumption and manufacturing costs, but those advantages would depend on the final hardware design.

Nintendo has not announced a Switch 2 Lite, confirmed its development, or provided any release date, price, or specifications.

For now, the Samsung development provides a technical basis for renewed speculation rather than evidence that a new Nintendo handheld is approaching release.
