Unlike Sony, Ubisoft Will Continue Releasing Games on Disc
Ubisoft has confirmed that it will continue releasing physical versions of its games, taking a different approach from Sony's reported plans to gradually move away from disc-based releases.
While Sony is reportedly considering reducing its reliance on physical discs by 2028, the French publisher has made it clear that it has no plans to switch entirely to digital game sales.
During the company's annual meeting with investors, Ubisoft Chief Financial Officer Frederick Duguet addressed the future of physical game releases and confirmed that discs will remain part of the company's distribution strategy.
Frederick Duguet said: “We’re not going to fully migrate to digital sales and keep the disks.”
However, this does not mean that every Ubisoft game will receive a physical edition. The company will continue to make decisions individually for each project, considering factors such as the type of game, its target audience, and the platforms on which it will be released.
According to Ubisoft, certain game genres remain particularly popular among players who prefer collecting physical copies. For this reason, completely abandoning disc-based releases would not necessarily make financial sense for the publisher.
According to IXBT Games, Ubisoft also discussed the importance of physical sales to its business. Major titles, including recent entries in the Assassin's Creed series, reportedly generate up to half of their sales through physical copies in several key markets.
With AAA game development requiring substantial investment, abandoning a distribution channel that still represents a significant share of sales could be a risky decision for the company.
Ubisoft's position highlights the continuing importance of physical games, even as digital purchases become increasingly common across the industry. While some companies are exploring a future with fewer disc-based releases, Ubisoft believes there is still enough demand to justify keeping physical editions available.
For players who prefer owning physical copies or collecting their favorite games, the company's decision means that discs will remain an option for at least some of its future releases.
