Why Did Dragon Age: The Veilguard Fail? Former BioWare Producer Explains Its Troubled Development
Mark Darrah, a veteran BioWare producer, has suggested that Electronic Arts' push for annual game releases and the reassignment of senior developers were major factors behind the commercial disappointment of Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
According to Darrah, the publisher's financial strategies conflicted with the lengthy development process required to create large-scale role-playing games. Pressure to deliver major titles on a yearly schedule, combined with the movement of experienced developers between projects, created significant challenges for the game's development.
According to GamesRadar, Darrah, who left BioWare in late 2020, explained that moving senior developers to other projects, including Anthem, had a negative impact on the development of Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
The former executive producer stated: “The project was going without the presence of its top leaders, because I was working on Anthem from 2017 to 2019.”
Darrah explained that Electronic Arts had pursued a strategy of releasing major BioWare games in consecutive years, including Dragon Age: Inquisition, Mass Effect: Andromeda, Anthem, and the next Dragon Age installment.
This approach reportedly placed considerable pressure on the development teams, leaving them with limited opportunities to evaluate projects from a broader perspective or reconsider important creative decisions.
As a result, development schedules were repeatedly adjusted, but the revised release dates often remained relatively close.
Darrah described the situation: “The game spent a lot of time in a situation that was very close to the supposed release date. The release date of the game changed many times and the result was that the team was always in a short distance from the final date.”
According to Darrah, the constant pressure to deliver the game prevented the development team from taking the time needed to reconsider its direction and address underlying problems.
He added: “There was no time to define the date for the project’s delivery in the distant future so that things could be reviewed, changed decisions, and looked at everything with a completely fresh look.”
Darrah suggested that these corporate decisions created a series of challenges for BioWare, a studio traditionally known for developing large-scale, story-driven role-playing games.
In his view, the combination of demanding release schedules, shifting development priorities, and the absence of experienced leadership contributed to the difficulties surrounding Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
The game's commercial performance has also raised questions about the future direction of BioWare and its established franchises, including Mass Effect.
