Xbox Manager Warns Game Developers Against Ignoring AI

Xbox Senior Business Strategy Manager Brandon Stirrup has argued that artificial intelligence will become an essential part of game development, warning that studios ignoring the technology risk falling behind.

Stirrup shared his views in a series of posts on his X account, describing how he created a basic video game prototype over a weekend using AI-assisted development tools.

According to Stirrup, the project took approximately three hours of active work across two days, despite having no previous experience creating video games.

He described the result as a rough but improvable game and suggested that modern AI tools could allow more people to experiment with game development without extensive programming knowledge.

The approach, commonly known as vibe coding, involves describing software requirements in natural language while AI tools generate and revise the underlying code.

Stirrup also questioned the long-term strategies of studios that refuse to consider AI, arguing that rapid technological progress could make traditional development plans outdated.

In another post, he claimed that hundreds of Xbox employees already use AI tools in their work but avoid discussing them publicly because of negative reactions from some players.

However, Microsoft has not independently confirmed the number of employees involved or the extent of AI use across its gaming teams.

Stirrup acknowledged that his public comments could have professional consequences, but maintained that the gaming industry should discuss AI adoption more openly.

His remarks come as Microsoft explores emerging development technologies through Xbox Labs, an initiative announced in October 2026.

Although Stirrup's comments reflect his personal position, they highlight the continuing debate over how generative AI could influence the future of video game development.
